Ok I’m just going to say it. Most DJs do not know how to play music that suits the crowd. In their quest for self-expression they veer so far from the set of “resonant moods” that their attempt at self-expression becomes merely self-indulgence.<\/p>\n
I may don’t know what all those colorful knobs do, but I can make a mean dance playlist that will take people on a journey. Maybe I should take the next step and just learn how to DJ myself. Anyone want to give me an overview of what I’d need to learn to go from soul pumping playlist selection to DJ’ing for crowds?<\/p>\n
But overall this is a bigger point than just music that fails to fully energize a party. This is about creative expression of all kinds in today’s society.<\/p>\n
I will take a strong stance and say Howard Thurman was wrong, when he said:<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.\u201d<\/p>\n
Or rather he was Half Right.<\/p>\n
Post-modernity in its quest for individuality has swung the pendulum so far into subjectivity that most people who have bought into this worldview, have lost touch with with the world, and are lost wandering in the Jungle of self-indulgence and irrelevance.<\/p>\n
The art and self-expression that truly moved the world was not created by looking solely inward in self-discovery. The truly culturally transformative art absorbed the cultural zeitgeist and through artistic sublimation, reflected it back to the general populace in powerful, unpredictable ways that caused people to question fundamental assumptions of their era.<\/p>\n
Yes self-discovery and exploration is a necessary part of this process, as you must purify your ego, clean up its shadow and awaken to True Self in order to absorb reality as it truly is. Understanding it profoundly so you can metabolize its essence and create self-expressed artifacts that articulate this understanding of the world not only as it is, but as it could be, should be, and will be.<\/p>\n

You need to find the INTERSECTION of what makes you come alive AND what the world needs.<\/p>\n
Subjectivity And Objectivity.
\nInterior and Exterior.
\nProblem and Solution.<\/p>\n
Working together in harmonious feedback loops if synchronicity.<\/p>\n
So make music of all kinds that expresses yourself, not for its own sake, but for a purpose larger than yourself. To make the world reverberate with the unique fingerprint of your essence. Align your creativity with the arc of human progress.<\/p>\n
