Why do people smile when the woman attacks the man?

It seems to me like it might come from the same place in the psyche from where people derive satisfaction when an underdog wins in athletic competition.

The odds are usually against women in an argument turns physical and the “winner” is usually determined by physical strength times aggression.

And everyone loves an underdog.

To further drive home this psychological hypothesis, imagine an incredibly buff tall female body builder physically abusing a scrawny 5 foot 2 male after an argument between them.

Likely people wouldn’t find that funny. And would instead react similarly to how the people in the video acted when the man attacked the woman.

So I think you’ll see this isn’t a gender issue but rather a strength issue which is normally determined by gender.

So then the under recognized situation of female on male abuse can take on far more nuanced angle…what is the socially acceptable procedure the person with greater physical strength can do when they are being physically attacked?

One possible solution is for the person of greater physical strength to assert their strength to the point of diffusion or neutralization but no further and then follow it with a moral reprimand to make very clear that behavior is unacceptable and intolerable.

Interestingly, arguably that’s what happened in the recent Jay Z – Solange Knowles situation, save for the in-the-moment impassioned reprimand, which I believe would have been the appropriate response.
