Reflections On Being Called “Intense”

Recently, I’ve noticed the most common word people have used to describe me is intense.

Reflecting on this…

– Intensity is in my nature. It is an inherent part of my being. (I just looked it up and it’s the very first word on my primary enneagram type: https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/typefive.asp)

– My understanding of the world, where it’s going and my desire to direct it towards certain possible futures rather than others is no small task. It requires energy and intensity that is beyond even my current capacity.

– I have been diligently practicing Energy Management since I was 17 (http://theenergyproject.com/), which emphasizes the importance of cycling between intense stress and deep recovery. My primary form of physical exercise is even called High Intensity Interval Training. I bring this same process and energy to the other spheres of my being: emotional, mental, spiritual.

– I strive to meet people where they are. And I can modulate my intensity to meet you. But communicate with me so I know your preferences and needs. My default is to implicitly see if people can meet me where my energy naturally is at any moment in time and to adapt from there.

– In isolation I see intensity as an inherently good thing. I see it as a full expression of energy, light and life.
