The most sophisticated interpretation of Satan according to Joseph Campbell:

Satan was sent to Hell because God asked him to bow to Man, but Satan was only willing to bow to God. So God punished Satan by sending him to hell in order to separate him from what he loved most, God himself.

Campbell believes we should read all myths not as truths about the outside world, but as eternal truths within the human psyche embedded in all of us.

Hell within our psyche is when we are separated from that we which we love, when we stop following our bliss.
