Post-Workout Recovery Rituals

Very sore 48 hours post workout.

Working on my recovery rituals.

Anyone have anything they swear by?

I do extra sleep. Extra Magnesium for muscle repair + double dose of Protein Shake. Stretching and Contrast showers.

This article is a pretty good overview:

And in another article I found a grounding ritual which is done by putting your bare feet on the earth and doing breath cycling. This supposedly releases free radicals and lymphatic byproducts produced by the muscle repair process. Surprisingly I seem to feel a fairly immediate effect.

While painful, I enjoy the sore phase.

It means I successfully pushed the limit and I will come back physically stronger.

And pushing in the fourth and fifth hour of the workout and going through the 48 hours sore phase is mental CrossFit for the rest of life.

Here are some words on the subject from Tony Schwartz, the author of one of my favorite books: The Power of Full Engagement

“Subjecting yourself to stress is the only way to systematically get stronger — physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. And you’ll get weaker if you don’t.

We live by the myth that stress is the enemy in our lives. The real enemy is our failure to balance stress with intermittent rest. Push the body too hard for too long — chronic stress — and the result will indeed be burnout and breakdown. But subject the body to insufficient stress, and it will weaken and atrophy.”
